Tomato Ketchup


  1. fresh fully ripe,red tomato pulp-1 kg
  2. sliced onion -2 medium sized
  3. garlic-chopped-4 to 5 pods
  4. cloves,cardamom,cumin seeds,mace(each in equal quantities) or garam masala powder - 2 tsp
  5. red chilli powder -2tsp
  6. black pepper powder-1/2 tsp
  7. salt-2 tsp
  8. sugar-100 gms or 1 tea cup
  9. vinegar-50 ml(10 tsp)
  10. sodium benzoate(preservative)-a pinch


  1. wash the tomatoes,and remove blemished portions and the green and yellow portions also
  2. cut into small pieces and add onion and garlic ,cook for about 5 to 10 minutes with mashing in between.then strain the juice and measure.
  3. take all the spices and tie them in a bag or clean muslin cloth.
  4. put this bag in the tomato pulp,and boil till you get the 1/2 the volume
  5. and take out the bag and squeeze the extract of the spices into the juices
  6. at this stage add sugar,salt ,vinegar and boil till you get the thick pulp
  7. boil for a while ,finally add the preservative
  8. pour into clean ,dry sterlised bottles when still and then put the lid.
