Nelli Kayi Thokku


  1. bettada nelli kayi(big goose berries)-20
  2. green chilles-20
  3. menthya (methi)seeds-1 tsp
  4. lemon-2 or tamarind juice-small lemon sized soaked
  5. oil-1 cup
  6. turmeric powder-1 tsp
  7. hing-1/2 tsp
  8. sasivae(mustard seed)-1 tsp
  9. salt-
  10. jaggery (bella)-1 tblsp


  1. wash nellikayi and spread over a cloth to remove excess moisture
  2. put in a bowl ,add a little oil ,steam cook for 10 to 15 minutes(without weight )
  3. cool it ,remove the inner seed and mash well
  4. roast menthya,hing,chilles with little oil,add mashed nelli kayi ,fry for 10 minutes,add salt,turmeric,lemon juice,now grind every thing together
  5. in a kadai heat oil ,add sasivae,when it splutters,add ground nellikayi ,fry for 15 to 20 minutes
  6. allow to cool and store in a dry bottle
